Is Delft the right shore excursion from Rotterdam? Delft and Kinderdijk, on your own or with a guide

· by Robin Lenskens · Updated

Yes, for most ships that dock in Rotterdam for 7 hours or more. Delft is 15 minutes by train from Rotterdam Centraal, about 40 minutes door to door from the cruise terminal, and its old centre is small enough to walk in an afternoon. You can do it on your own for roughly €40 per person in fares and entry tickets, or take the 8-hour Delft and Kinderdijk small-group excursion for €279 per adult. On a shorter call, the 4-hour Kinderdijk excursion by private boat is €179 per adult, but it goes to the windmills, not to Delft. Delft is the wrong choice if your call is shorter than 6 hours, or if what you came for is Rotterdam’s modern architecture.

Our guides meet cruise guests at the terminal exit every week through the cruise season. What they see: the first passengers are out of the terminal 15 to 20 minutes after the gangway opens, and the hall stays busy for the half hour after that, the taxi queue is gone within the hour, and the people who struggle are the ones who planned Rotterdam, Delft and Kinderdijk in one day. Pick one plan and stick to it.

Why Delft from Rotterdam and not somewhere else?

Because Delft gives you the most of the Netherlands in the shortest travel time. Four things sit within ten minutes’ walk of each other in the old centre.

The Nieuwe Kerk on the Markt holds the mausoleum of William of Orange and the royal crypt of the House of Orange-Nassau, where every Dutch monarch since has been buried. The Oude Kerk, five minutes away across two canals, has a tower that leans visibly and the grave of Johannes Vermeer, who was born, worked and died in Delft and painted the city in View of Delft. One €10 ticket covers both churches. The Vermeer Centrum on the Voldersgracht explains his work and his Delft, open daily 10:00 to 17:00; it holds no original paintings, so if you want to stand in front of a real Vermeer, that is the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Delft Blue pottery has been made here since the 1600s, and Royal Delft (De Porceleyne Fles, founded 1653) is the only one of the original factories still working. It is 25 minutes on foot south of the station, and most of the shops selling the real thing are on and around the Markt.

The centre is flat, compact and car-light. From the station to the Markt is 10 minutes on foot, signposted. If you want Rotterdam’s skyline, Markthal and Cube Houses, Delft is not that; the sister post on hollandcitytours.com covers what to do in Rotterdam from the ship.

What fits in 6, 8 and 10 hours in port?

Count from the moment you can walk off the ship, not from the arrival time printed in your itinerary, and work backwards from all-aboard. Our rule of thumb: the last train you take out of Delft is the one leaving 90 minutes before all-aboard, and the last metro from Rotterdam Centraal is the one leaving 60 minutes before. Travel details for the independent route are in the sister post on this site, from the Rotterdam cruise port to Delft. The plans below assume the ship is cleared at 08:00 and you are at the terminal exit at 08:30.

6 hours in port (all-aboard 13:30). The Delft and Kinderdijk excursion does not fit a call this short, and we do not sell it for one. If you would rather see windmills than Delft, the Small Group Kinderdijk Windmills by Boat fits: about 4 hours from the terminal by private boat, with no road traffic on the way back to your ship. On your own: metro at 08:40, train at 09:10, on the Markt at 09:35. Walk the Markt and both churches until 11:00, coffee on the Beestenmarkt, train from Delft no later than 12:00, back at the terminal around 12:45. That gives about two and a half hours in Delft, enough for the centre, not for Royal Delft. If you would rather have a guide for those hours, the Highlights of Delft private walking tour is 2 hours, €199 for your group, and starts on the Markt at the time you choose.

8 hours in port (all-aboard 15:30). Delft on your own fits, with Royal Delft as the part to cut if time runs short. If you would rather have a guide and the transport arranged, the Small Group Kinderdijk Windmills by Boat fits with time to spare, about 4 hours by private boat from the terminal, but it goes to the windmills, not to Delft. On your own: on the Markt at 09:35, guided or self-guided walk and the Nieuwe Kerk until 11:30, lunch, bus or walk to Royal Delft for 13:00 to 14:00 (the museum says to plan about 90 minutes, so this is a shortened visit), train from Delft at 14:00, terminal by 14:45. Tight, and Royal Delft is the part most people cut.

10 hours in port (all-aboard 17:30). The Delft and Kinderdijk small-group excursion fits with margin: 08:45 to 16:45. On your own, Delft has a full day in it: both churches, the Vermeer Centrum, a long lunch, Royal Delft at a normal pace, and the 16:00 train. Doing Delft and Kinderdijk independently in 10 hours means a train, a metro, the WaterShuttle (Friday to Sunday only since October 2025) and a lot of clock-watching; we advise against it.

Delft and Kinderdijk, or Kinderdijk by boat?

Take Delft and Kinderdijk if you have 10 hours or more and want the town as well as the windmills. Take Kinderdijk by boat if your call is shorter, if you are travelling with someone who tires easily, or if the windmills are what you came for; it does not include Delft. Delft and Kinderdijk is a small group of at most 16 with minibus transport from the terminal door and back; Kinderdijk by boat is at most 11 guests with a private boat both ways. Neither includes lunch.

Two things to check before you choose. Kinderdijk’s opening hours shrink in late autumn: 09:00 to 17:30 from 6 March to 1 November, 10:30 to 16:00 from 2 November to the end of December, closed on 25 December (kinderdijk.nl, fetched 17 October 2026). And on a Sunday the Nieuwe Kerk is closed to visitors: the Delft and Kinderdijk excursion runs as normal, but the guide shows you the church from the Markt instead of taking you inside; see the Sunday notes below.

On your own, small group, or a private minibus day?

On your own is the cheapest by far and works well for confident travellers on a weekday. The small-group excursion costs more and buys you a guide, the transport, the timing and the written guarantees; both small-group excursions run from a minimum of 4 guests. The private day is for a group of up to 16 who want their own itinerary, or for anyone disembarking in Rotterdam with luggage.

Sources for the independent costs: RET fares 2026 (€5.50 for a 2-hour ticket, €12.00 for a day ticket); Oude en Nieuwe Kerk prices (€10 adult, €4.75 child 6 to 11, free under 6, fetched 17 October 2026); Royal Delft Museum visitor information (€17.50 adult with audio tour, €7.50 child 7 to 12, free up to 6, fetched 17 October 2026). With a bank card the metro ride is about €1.66 (RET basic fare €1.16 plus €0.18 per kilometre, ret.nl fares) and the train from Rotterdam Centraal to Delft €4.40 one way, second class, full fare, as the NS journey planner showed for 20 October 2026; check it again for your date. The Kinderdijk entry ticket, if you go on your own, is €21 adult and €9 child 4 to 12, 10 percent less online, and includes the museum mills, the boat tour, the Wisboom pumping station and the film (kinderdijk.nl, fetched 17 October 2026).

A middle way: travel by train, meet a Discover Delft guide on the Markt for the Delft and Royal Delft private tour (2 hours in the centre plus Royal Delft, from €224 per group), and go back by train. A family keeps the price of the independent route and gets the guide where it matters.

What does the day look like on the excursion?

You walk out of the terminal exit and the guide is standing there with a Holland City Tours sign. You already have the guide’s name and mobile number from the email sent before your call, so if the ship is cleared late or you are held up on board, you send a message and the guide waits. The minibus is parked at the terminal. The drive to Delft is 20 to 25 minutes.

In Delft the guide parks near the centre and walks you in through the old streets to the Markt: the Stadhuis, the Nieuwe Kerk with the tomb of William of Orange, the canals of the Oude Delft, the Oude Kerk from outside, and the spots Vermeer painted. After about an hour you have free time for lunch on the Markt or the Beestenmarkt and the Delft Blue shops. Then the minibus takes you to Royal Delft for the factory, the painters at work and the museum, and continues to Kinderdijk for the boat, a mill interior and the pumping station. The Kinderdijk excursion by boat has no minibus: the guide walks you to the boat stop next to the terminal, and a private boat takes you up the river to the windmills in about 30 minutes and back the same way. Either way the guide has you back at the terminal exit well before all-aboard, and the company tracks your ship’s real arrival and departure times through the day. The back-to-the-ship calculator shows the return timing for your ship.

What happens if the ship is late, or skips Rotterdam?

Three written guarantees apply to both small-group excursions and the private day. If a delay on the company’s side means you miss your ship, you get a full refund and transport to the next port is arranged, up to €100 per person. If your ship skips Rotterdam, you get a full refund or a free change of date. And you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the start. The guarantees are printed on each tour page, so you have them in writing before you pay. If the ship simply arrives late, the guide waits; the itinerary is shortened where it has to be and the return time is held.

Is Delft worth it on a Sunday or Monday?

Yes, with two adjustments. Both churches are closed to visitors on Sundays, which means the Nieuwe Kerk interior and the royal tomb are off the programme; the Delft and Kinderdijk excursion runs as normal on a Sunday, with the guided walk passing the church instead of going inside. Royal Delft is open every day of the year except 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Most shops in the centre open at 12:00 on Sunday and Monday, so a morning spent in the churches and canals, then shops and lunch after noon, is the right order on a Monday. In the quiet months the church hours are shorter too: 11:00 to 16:00 on weekdays from November to January, 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and from February to October (oudeennieuwekerkdelft.nl, fetched 17 October 2026). Thursday is market day on the Markt, lively and crowded.

Is Delft manageable for seniors and people with limited mobility?

Delft is one of the easier Dutch towns for this. The centre is flat; the obstacles are cobbles, canal bridges with a few steps and narrow pavements. The Nieuwe Kerk and the Oude Kerk are at ground level. The Nieuwe Kerk tower is a long climb and has no access for children under 6, so skip it unless you are fit.

On the Delft and Kinderdijk excursion the minibus drops you close to the centre and again at the Royal Delft door, so the walking is about an hour in Delft and whatever you choose in your free time. At Kinderdijk the dyke path is flat and paved; the windmill interior has steep steps and can be skipped. If someone in your party uses a walker or wheelchair, tell us when you book and we plan the route around it. If the terminal-to-metro walk, the stairs at Centraal and the 10 minutes from Delft station to the Markt sound like too much, the private minibus day is the version built for it.

Frequently asked questions

Which one is better to visit, Delft or Kinderdijk? Should we try to visit both in one day?

Delft if you want a town with history, a market square, canals and lunch; Kinderdijk if you want the windmill landscape and little else. Both in one day on your own is not realistic from a cruise ship. With a minibus and a guide it is, which is exactly what the 8-hour Delft and Kinderdijk excursion does, and it needs a port call of 10 hours or more.

I would like to visit Delft from the Rotterdam cruise port. Is 8 hours in port enough?

Yes. Eight hours gives you about four and a half hours in Delft on your own, or, if the windmills appeal more than Delft, the 4-hour Kinderdijk excursion by private boat with time to spare. Work backwards from all-aboard and take the train out of Delft no later than 90 minutes before it.

What is the best way to get to Delft from the Rotterdam cruise port?

Walk 3 to 4 minutes to Wilhelminaplein metro station, take line D or E to Rotterdam Centraal, then any train towards Den Haag, Leiden or Amsterdam that stops at Delft, 12 to 15 minutes. Tap in and out with a contactless bank card. Count on 35 to 45 minutes door to door; the full route with photos is in our cruise port to Delft post.

Can we see the Delft factory and museum without being tied to a tour schedule?

Yes. Royal Delft is open daily 09:30 to 17:00, €17.50 with an audio tour included, and you can walk in without a reservation. It is 25 minutes on foot south of Delft station or a short bus ride, and the museum suggests about 90 minutes for the visit. Read whether the Royal Delft factory tour is worth it before you decide.

We are in port on a Sunday. Is Delft still worth it?

Yes, but the two churches are closed to visitors on Sundays and the shops open at 12:00. Plan the canals and the Markt for the morning, lunch and Delft Blue shopping after noon, and Royal Delft, which is open daily, in the afternoon.

Can we take a taxi from the port to Delft instead of the train?

Yes, it is 20 to 25 minutes in normal traffic. Insist on the meter and refuse any fixed-price offer at the rank. For a couple the train is cheaper; for a family of four or anyone who finds the metro change at Centraal a strain, a taxi one way and the train back is a reasonable mix.

We use a walker. Is Delft doable from the ship?

Doable, with time. Allow extra minutes at both stations and for the 10-minute walk from Delft station to the Markt; the town itself is flat, and the cobbles and small canal bridges are the main effort. If you would rather not do the metro and train, the Delft and Kinderdijk excursion takes you door to door by minibus, the Kinderdijk excursion goes by boat from next to the terminal, and the private day can be planned entirely around your pace.

Which option should you book?

For a shorter call, the Small Group Kinderdijk Windmills by Boat, about 4 hours by private boat from the terminal, €179 adult and €119 child; it goes to the windmills, not to Delft. For 10 hours or more, the Delft and Kinderdijk small-group excursion, about 8 hours, €279 adult and €179 child. If you are coming to Delft by train on your own and want a guide for the centre, the Highlights of Delft private walking tour is 2 hours and €199 for your group, starting on the Markt. All shore excursions can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before; the full list is on the Holland City Tours shore excursions page.
